Long story short: Fire at a mental hospital. Reporters write a story. Copy editor Persichilli edits and writes headline:ROASTED NUTS And for some reason, readers went nuts.

Insensitive, they yelled. Inaccurate, they keened.

And it was inaccurate. No one got roasted.

Persichilli has written an apology, taking full responsibility for the head.

"After I kicked a few things around in my mind," he wrote, "I decided on the headline that appeared in the paper."

He then acknowledged that he should have kicked himself.

"When I wrote it, I didn't do it to be mean-spirited. I didn't intend to hurt anybody's feelings, upset anyone's sensibilities or make fun of anyone's handicaps."

And far be it from us to criticize.

After a few of the headlines

we've written for the Daily News, what do you think we are?

Nuts?
