At around 11am on 29 June 2012 a visitor to the gallery, Andrew Shannon, punched the painting causing "huge damage, shocking damage"[4] with "an extensive three-branched tear".[5]After 18 months of restoration work, on 1 July 2014, the painting was re-hung in the gallery, behind protective glass.[3] The restoration saw 7% of the damaged area being lost, in a process that involved sewing microscopic threads back together.[4] Shannon was jailed for 5 years for the attack.[6]
